Update Name Servers

The Name Servers control where traffic for the domain goes. If you are moving from WordPress.com to a self-hosted WordPress.org blog, you will need to use the Name Servers provided by your web hosting company.

  1. Login using the Domain Manager Login instructions.
  2. Click on your domain.

  3. Click the Nameservers button.
    nameservers-button
  4. Select the option that says, “I host my domains with another provider.”

  5. Make any changes and click the OK button.
  6. Click the Log Out link at the top right.
  7. Wait for the change to take full effect across the internet (usually a few hours).

Transfer to Another Registrar

Note: You may not transfer a domain name within 60 days of purchase or for 60 days after any contact information is changed. This is standard across all registrars. It is a rule set by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

A domain transfer is initiated at the new registrar. You will need to unlock the domain and request your Auth Code before you can complete the transfer.

  1. Login using the Domain Manager Login instructions.
  2. Click on your domain.
    domain-list
  3. Look for Authorization Code and click the “Send by Email” link next to it.

  4. Click the Locking button.

Additional Information

Why can’t I find feature X or link Y that is mentioned in the domain management help system?

The help system at the domain management site is for domains registered directly through Wild West Domains. We have a limited domain reseller account which does not have all of the options.

Can I create CNAME entries or MX records for my domain?

No. You can only modify the Name Server records. If you would like to setup email for your domain, you can setup custom email with Google Apps.

Can I create subdomains?

No. You cannot setup a subdomain (including “www”) for a domain purchased through WordPress.com. If you own a domain through another registrar, you may map a subdomain.

All of my personal details are visible when someone does a WHOIS lookup on my domain. Can I change to a private domain registration?

No. If you wait 60 days after the date when the domain was registered, you can transfer it to another registrar that supports private domain registrations.

How do I get FTP access to my domain?

Registering a domain does not get you FTP access to your blog or domain. Domains registered at WordPress.com do not get a hosting account like you might get at other registrars or hosting companies. You should use the Media Library in your blog to manage files instead.
