Moving a Google Knol to WordPress.com

,

Welcome!

WordPress.com is pleased to provide free hosting for sites that would like to use the Annotum themes to migrate content away from Google Knol before Knol is permanently closed on October 1, 2012. If you are looking for instructions on how to move your Knol to WordPress.com, please continue reading.

For frequently asked questions regarding the use of Annotum themes on WordPress.com, please read our FAQ. If you have questions about the Annotum project itself, please visit the Annotum site.

Getting Started as a New WordPress.com User

When you log in to Knol, you will be given the option to migrate your Knol to WordPress.com. For more information on the options available to you on Knol, please read the Google FAQ.

Here’s the first screen you will see on WordPress.com:

Please fill out the options for your new username, your password, and your email address. If either your desired username or email address are already in use on WordPress.com, the signup form will tell you. (If your email address is already in use, that means you already have a WordPress.com account, and you should log in to it instead.)

Once you have filled out the form as required, click the big orange Sign up button.

Now, we need to choose a URL for your WordPress.com site:

Again, we will let you know if the site address you want is already taken on WordPress.com.

You can also choose the theme you would prefer to use on this screen. There are only two options available for Annotum-enhanced sites on WordPress.com, Annotum Base and Annotum Sans.

If you do not want to automatically have your knols redirected to their new equivalent posts on WordPress.com, uncheck the related checkbox. If you decide later that you do want to, you can re-import, or set them manually within Knol.

When you’ve made your selection, click the Create Site and Set Theme button.

You’re done with the signup process, and now we can begin the migration of your Knol! Please skip down to the section labeled Authorize WordPress.com to Access Your Google Account.

Getting Started as an Existing WordPress.com User

If you already have an account on WordPress.com and would like to use it to import your Knol, please either log in to WordPress.com before beginning the import process, or click the link at the top of the first page you see marked login with your WordPress.com account.

You’ll then need to log in to your WordPress.com account.

Once you are logged in, you’ll be asked if you would like to use one of your existing WordPress.com sites to import your Knol content, or if you would rather start a new site for that purpose. Click on the option that applies to you.

If you chose to create a new site, you’ll then need to sign up for the new site and choose the Annotum theme you would like to use. If the site address you are trying to register isn’t available, we’ll tell you.

Once you’re ready to proceed, click Create Site and Set Theme and move on to the next step in the process: Authorize WordPress.com to Access Your Google Account.

If you chose to import to one of your existing sites, you will need to choose the site you want to use and you’ll have to change that site’s theme to one of the Annotum themes in order to enable the Annotum features.

Once you have selected the existing site you want to use and have selected the theme you want to enable, click the Select Site and Set Theme button. We’re ready for the next step in the process.

Authorize WordPress.com to Access Your Google Account

Now, we need to make sure that WordPress.com can access your Google Knol information and begin to move it to your new site. You’ll be sent over to Google, where if you aren’t already, you’ll need to log in to your Google account:

Fill in your Google account information and click Sign in.

Google will inform you that WordPress.com needs access to some of your Google information.

Please review this screen and then click Allow access to begin the next step in the migration process.

Migrating Your Knol to WordPress.com

We’re almost done! You’ll be taken back to WordPress.com, where we’ll show you the current status of the move.

If your Knol had more than one author, you may need to assign those articles to other WordPress.com users, or invite your coauthors to join WordPress.com. Every coauthor who wants to move with you to WordPress.com will need to sign up for their own account.

If your coauthors aren’t already on WordPress.com, you can assign articles to them later once they have created their accounts.

Once you have completed that step, or if your Knol had only one author, the process will soon be complete.

That’s it! You’re ready to start using your new Annotum-powered WordPress.com site.
