Excerpts are optional hand-crafted summaries of your content that are shown in feeds and possibly on the home and archives pages depending on your theme. You can add a customized excerpt for your post using the Excerpt module.
Note that excerpts are only utilized by some themes. If your theme does not support them, you can still split your posts into summaries using the MORE tag.
