Custom Design »CSS Support

The WordPress.com Premium and Business plans include a CSS editor, which lets you customize the appearance of your site’s theme using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) code. These plans include live chat and email support, and you might want to ask one of our Happiness Engineers for assistance with your CSS customizations. We’re happy to take a look and point you in the right direction.

CSS is a great way to customize a theme by altering aspects of it, but it’s not a very good way to design a theme from scratch or completely overhaul an existing theme. In these cases, choosing a different theme is often a better solution.

CSS can occasionally be complex and the support we provide is limited. We evaluate the complexity of each request on a case-by-case basis; sometimes, the depth or frequency of customization help you’re looking for may go beyond what we’re able to provide ourselves. Generally, we provide support for:

We don’t directly provide support for:

  • Free themes from the WordPress.org repository or elsewhere.
  • Premium themes from outside the WordPress.com theme showcase, such as Divi and Avada.
  • Output generated by third-party plugins, including layouts generated by page builders like Elementor, Beaver Builder, and the like.
  • Substantial/major CSS changes to any theme or plugin, whether third-party or not.

Examples of substantial changes we would not generally provide support for are:

  • Displaying the desktop menu at mobile screen sizes or vice versa.
  • Styling [display-posts] shortcode content to look like the theme’s grid layout.
  • Creating/styling grids or columns.
  • Moving elements around the page, in most scenarios.
  • Changes that require structural/functional modifications to a theme or plugin via HTML, PHP, JavaScript, or other languages beyond CSS.

In the situations above, we can help you find a freelance web developer through our partners at Upwork. These freelancers are highly skilled at tasks like crafting complex CSS, building child themes, creating custom themes, or coding custom functions and plugins. You can work with them directly to create a site you’re proud of.
