Domain Mapping vs Domain Transfer

There are two ways to use a domain that you bought with another registrar. (A registrar is a company with whom you can buy domains)

Domain Mapping

This method associates your domain with your WordPress.com site, but the domain continues to be registered, and paid, at the other registrar.

When you choose to map a domain to your site, it is free of charge if your site already has the Personal, Premium, Business, or eCommerce plan. This option is available for domains with any extension.

The mapping process creates an association on WordPress.com to your site, which prepares our system to display your site at that address.

You need to complete the process at your registrar, by updating the Name Servers of your domain, so that they point at our servers. We have a guide for the mapping process on this page:

Use a domain you already own (Domain Mapping)

Please note that we are not able to accept mapping for Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) if it contains language-specific characters such as ä, û, ע, ж, 字, मा.

Domain Transfer

This method transfers the registration to WordPress.com, so that in future the domain would be renewed on your account here.

We have a list of the types of domain that we’re currently able to receive transfers of:

Domain Pricing and Available TLDs

For any domain that we cannot transfer, you can still use Domain Mapping.

Please note that we are not able to accept transfers for Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) if the domain contains language-specific characters such as ä, û, ע, ж, 字, मा.

If you have a Personal, Premium, Business, or eCommerce plan that is in its first year, you can choose to transfer your existing domain to us for free, instead of registering a new domain.

If you already have a domain registered with us as part of your plan, transferring a domain from another registrar is a paid purchase. The cost of the transfer will be in the Domain Pricing and Available TLDs list, but you can also check it by going to My Site > Manage > Domains > Add a Domain.

Our full domain transfer instructions are located here:

Summary

To summarise: using the Domain Mapping service means that you associate your domain with your WordPress.com site, but you renew the domain at your registrar (where you bought the domain), and renew your site plan here at WordPress.com.

Using the Domain Transfer service means that your domain’s registration is moved over to WordPress.com and we then become your registrar, so all future renewals of your domain and plan for your WordPress.com site are managed and paid on your WordPress.com account.
