Recurring Payments Button

This feature is currently under development and is being tested on Longreads.com. Keep an eye on the main WordPress.com news blog — when it’s available for all WordPress.com users, we’ll announce it there.

The Recurring Payments button lets you collect recurring revenue from your site visitors. When a visitor signs up, you’ll start receiving regular payments from them — either monthly or yearly — creating predictable earnings for your blog or website.

What Does the Recurring Payments Button Do?

  • Helps you set up an account with Stripe, which you’ll need to process payments. (Or connects to an existing account, if you already have one),
  • Encrypts credit card data,
  • Automatically bills subscribers at the end of their Renewal Period again and transfers the funds to your Stripe account,
  • Allows the buyer to cancel the subscription any time,
  • Automatically sends receipts to subscribers.

Adding a Recurring Payments Button

The Recurring Payments button is a block that you can insert into posts and pages. To start, click the ( + ) sign in the editor, or initiate the block search by typing `/` and searching for “recurring payments”.

Once you select the recurring payments block for the first time, you will be prompted to connect your WordPress.com account to Stripe, the payment processor used by the Recurring Payments system. Click the “Connect to Stripe or set up account” and you’ll be directed to Stripe to continue.

(If you already have Stripe account, choose “Already have Stripe account” in the window that opens. You’ll be prompted to log in.)

Connecting Stripe

Any money you earn using WordPress.com Recurring Payments will go into your Stripe account. From there, you can move it to the personal account of your choice. WordPress.com never has any access to the money you earn.

Stripe-Supported countries

Stripe currently offers services only in following countries. You will need to be a citizen or own a company in one of them to have Stripe account and use this feature.

Once you fill out the Stripe form and connect it to your WordPress.com account, you’ll see this message:

Congrats! Your site is now connected to Stripe. You can close this window and click the “Re-check Connection” link in your Recurring Payments button block. Once you click “Re-check Connection”, all the setup options will appear.

Creating Your First Button

You’re ready to create your first button. You need to set:

  • The price of your recurring payment.
  • The currency you use.
  • A description of what recurring payment entails, which will be used in emails that your customers receive.
  • The renewal interval, which can be monthly or yearly.

Once you click “Add amount,” the new Recurring Payments button will be created and inserted into your post or page.

You can customize the text on your button by clicking on it and editing it directly, and you can add multiple Recurring Payments buttons to a page if you’d like to offer a range of price points.

The Recurring Payments button is available on all paid plans, for both WordPress.com and Jetpack-connected sites. You pay us a percentage of the revenue your site generates through Recurring Payments, which varies depending on your plan.

In addition to the fees you pay us, Stripe collects 2.9% + $0.30 for each payment made to your Stripe account.

This system allows you to offer Recurring Payments with minimal upfront investment. As you collect more subscribers, it may make sense to move to a higher plan in order to retain more revenue.

Recurring Payments Management

Recurring Payments provides a suite of tools to help you monitor and grow your subscription base.

Revenue Breakdown

You can view a detailed breakdown of your revenue by going to My Sites > Earn > Recurring Payments.

  • Total earnings shows all charges collected by Recurring Payments buttons on your site.
  • “Last 30 days” shows the revenue you’ve earned over the last 30 days.
  • “Next month” shows upcoming charges in the next 30 days. This assumes that nobody unsubscribes, and does not include any new subscribers.

Subscribers List

You’ll find the list of your subscribers at My Sites > Earn > Recurring Payments as well. At the end of the list is a link for downloading a CSV file containing a list of your subscribers with their email addresses, subscription data and other information. You can use that file to connect recurring payments to any accounting or fulfillment systems you use.

Managing Recurring Payment Plans

Under your subscriber list, you’ll find options for editing your recurring payment plans (that is, the amounts).

After clicking the arrow on the right of that section, you’ll see:

You can edit an existing amount, or add a new one.

You can change:

  • Currency
  • Price
  • Renewal schedule
  • Description

You can also add a “Pay what you want” option.

If you change any prices, existing subscriptions will not be affected. They will continue renewing at the same price they started with.

 

You can also delete a plan. NOTE: any existing subscriptions will continue. If you want to stop subscriptions for existing customers, please contact a Happiness Engineer.

“Pay what you want” Option

“Pay what you want” option enables the contributor to customize the “contribution amount” during checkout. The default price will be the one selected by you, but it will be possible to change it during the checkout process.

Issuing Refunds

You can manage refunds yourself through the Stripe Dashboard. Follow the instructions here to issue a full or partial refund.

Limit Access to Content

If you want to sell access to exclusive, subscriber-only content, you can use the Recurring Payments button in conjunction with the WordPress “Password Protect” feature. Set posts or pages as password-protected. When a new subscriber signs up, send them the password by email.

Reuse the Same Button

Some visitors will become subscribers right away,  while others might need multiple reminders. That’s why it’s common practice to repeat offers multiple times across your site and in multiple posts and pages

To simplify the process of adding the same Recurring Payments button in multiple locations, each new button includes all the price points you’ve already added. When you insert a new Recurring Payments button block into your post, you can select one of your previously-added price points.
